Bangalore: A scandalous incident of a sweeper giving stitches to patients at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh has come to light. The incident happened at the Babu Banarsi Das District hospital in Bulandshahr where a sweeper was videoed while giving a young child stitches on his leg. While on the other hand, a ward boy was seen administering tetanus shots to another patient.

Further, one video clip shows the Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) of the hospital, Dr Shishir Kumar, standing by and watching as one of the men treated a patient. On tape, Dr Kumar stands by, not seeming to interfere or look around for one of the 23 doctors registered at the hospital.

Hospital authorities denied they were sweepers but said they were Operation Theatre (OT) attendants and were pitching in as there were too many patients at the hospital following an accident.

Chief Medical Officer SHS Danu was quoted saying to Zee News "Sometimes there is a situation when there is nobody to attend to patients, so they sometimes help with the distribution of medicines."

Danu further said that the ward boy seen in the video is trained and has been assisting in OT for over 10 years. “He was working under my supervision”, he added.

When the matter led to fury, state Health Minister Ahmed Hasan justified it by saying that there was a rush of patients at the hospital and not enough doctors were there. "We will have this probed to rule out whether those being shown in the news are ward boys or sweepers," he said.

Hasan showed no sign of alarm after viewing the video clip. He only said, "I am told that these two were Operation Theatre attendants. There was an accident, too many patients were brought in and they were helping out. But if this is true then we will probe this and act," as reported by NDTV.
